TL:DR - overview of GM tools, digital versions going out soon
Hey everyone,
The digital files for the Game Master tools will be sent over soon. All backers in the Elf tier or higher, and those that selected the digital GM tool add-on will receive a copy. In the meantime I wanted to showcase some of the cards.
Spell Tracker
This is the revised version of the spell tracker that was originally shown on the campaign page. It can be handed out to players to supplement their character sheets and tracks the following:
- Spell Slots - use a token or color in the circles to help keep track of your magic use
- Exhaustion - use a token to track your exhaustion level
- DC - quick reference to calculate your Spell DC & Spell Attack Bonus (in the box)
- Hit Dice - manage your hit dice count and usage. The 10th circle is greyed out so that if you have more then 10 dice you can keep a token on it to indicate you are in the teens (kind of like an abacus)
- Inspiration - "if you don't know, now you know"
- Additional Tracking - these blank boxes can be used by players to mark down information related to their character such as number of: evocations, prepared spells, rage, sorcery points, wild shape, etc. These should also be helpful for multi-class characters
On the backside of this card is a list of classes, their spell casting modifiers, and information on when they regain spells. This card has come a long way from when I prototyped it using mini reese's pieces on a playing card to workout how to arrange all of the information.
Player Turn Cards
These were designed to give to players as a reference so that they were aware of all of the different options available when they play. I was tempted to add Cry as a Free Action but didn't have enough space to include it. The front of the card goes over Movement, Actions, and what is considered a Bonus or Reaction. The back of the card has information related to health and exhaustion making it a good companion to the Spell Tracker. The idea behind this card that it could be flipped over if a player was reduced to 0 hp, as a visual indicator that they were unconscious and had to roll death saves. There are dice next to success and failure that let players know what happens if they roll a natural 1/20 on a death save.
Reference Cards
In addition to cards that can be provided to players, a number of reference cards were designed for the GM to save them from having to search through their source books. In the Potions card above there is a list of each potion with a quick description of its effects. Spells were also highlighted in red to help them stand out. The back of the card has a breakdown of the potions with multiple options - health, giant strength, resistance. More quick reference cards have been created such as the pack guide below.
The pack breakdown card was designed as a comparison guide so that at a glance you can see what is available in each one. The back of the card has more information about items specific to the different packs.
Conditions
Condition information always seemed so sparse, so these cards were designed to give you the condition properties along with common causes and the related resolution. At the bottom is a list of spells that could cause the condition. Magic items were not included to conserve space on the cards, and because players with those items would be more familiar with their effects.
Cards have been created for each of the conditions, and similar to the Potions card, spells in the Recovery section are coded red to differentiate them from other options. In the case of the Poison condition card, a reference guide to different poisons is listed on the back.
My hope with all of these GM tools was to distill the information from the source books down into a more accessible form. From supporting players with supplementary aids to pulling out less referenced rules that the GM could quickly refer to.
Until soon!
